How To: Prepare Your Mesh Cover Pool For Closing
Shut off heat so water has time to cool.
1) Balance the water chemistry
Approximately 3 – 7 days prior to closing the pool, adjust your water balance within the ranges below: (this is the most important step as it will provide you a much cleaner pool upon opening)
2) Clean Pool
Skim pool, vacuum pool, brush pool. If pool is especially dirty, has a lot of silt or a lot of algae, vacuum pool to waste (multiport in waste position). This means to bypass the filter, and vacuum dirt from floors/walls out the backwash line. This prevents constant clogging/cleaning of filter. Brush the pool thoroughly. The pool should be as clean and clear as possible before covering.
3) Lower Water Level In Pool. ( ½” below circular pool water returns )
When using a submersible pump: simply turn off your main pump and equipment, and any time clocks controlling your equipment, and use your submersible pump to lower the pool water level to ½” under the bottom of the pool return openings.
When using the main filter pump: To lower your pool, you will have to follow these steps:
A) Turn off all equipment for your pool (light, heater, pool cleaner pump, main filter pump)
B) For Sand and D.E. systems, please backwash (and rinse) your filter 2-3 times then put your multi-valve to the “WASTE” position. Consider adding Filter Fresh to clean your filter before closing. This will help prevent mold and algae growth inside the filter during the off season. For cartridge filter users, simply turn your auxiliary valve to output the water to the blue backwash hose.
C) Turn your main filter pump on, and turn off all valves on the suction side (immediately in front of the pump) of your pool completely off except for your “main drain” valve. If your valves are not marked, keep a single valve on at a time until none of the skimmers are pulling any water and only the main drain is.
D) The water in your pool will now pump out of the backwash hose. It will pump below the skimmer openings continuously, so keep an eye on the pool, once the water is 1” below the skimmer opening, turn your filter pump off. Note: if your filter pump is sucking in air when the water gets low, you have either turned off the wrong valves, or have not closed them fully, be sure to check early that only the main drain valve is open. Don’t forget to shut off your pump and close the main drain valve when the water is low enough or you could drain the entire pool.
Please Note: If you use an Aquador™ or a Skimmer Plug™ skimmer plate cover on your pool, the water level will not need to be lowered.
4) Provide Required Closing Equipment
The pool closing technicians will need a few different items to properly close your pool. These are generally just the 1½” return plugs and the skimmer freeze protection Gizzmo™ towers. Those customers that do not lower their water also need to ensure that the Aquador™ or Skimmer Plug™ are available. If any of the equipment is unavailable, we will sell the customer whatever is required off the truck.
5) Accessibility for the service techs:
Please ensure that if you are not available the day of your pool closing, the service technicians will be able to access your pool and equipment. Please ensure that the auto cover is accessible (key available, switch box open) and there are power outlets available to the service techs. If there is only one power outlet accessible outside or the breaker trips often, it is recommended that the closing be scheduled when someone is available at the home to restore power if the service techs require it.
Please make sure all pets are secured. We are experiencing more issues with dog bites and pets running out of gates. We can not be responsible for loose animals and will not do work when animals are loose.
Terms of Service
Payment is due upon receipt at completion of service. We do require a credit card on file to set up service. We allow 5 business days before initiating a charge to your credit card. This allows you to pay by check or cash if preferred and also allows you time to look over the bill and contact us if there are any questions.
